Being a freshman is a challenge for many students, especially when the requirements change. This year credits changed from 48 to a required 54. What many people do not know, however, is that this change had been in the works for awhile. The changes were supposed to be made in 2003, but EPHS was experiencing budget cuts, so it was not a good time to make the change. Changes were necessary because EPHS had the lowest graduation requirements in the surrounding area.
However, the challenges of the system changing frequently still remain. The incoming freshman will experience two changes next year. The math standards will increase; Algebra II and Stats will be required for the class of 2012. As far as the class of 2013 goes, Algebra will be taken by all eighth graders, and they will no longer receive high school credits for the class. Most transfer students should not have an issue meeting the required credits. However, it depends on how many credits each student arrives with at EPHS. “As we live in a changing world, our school and education are going to change too,” said associate principal Jane Stevenson. The credits changing only seem natural to school board and district administration, which will end up benefiting the class of 2011. This change, predicts Stevenson, “will look as more of a positive thing on applications. Every student will walk out with an excellent education. And one thing is for certain, you can never go wrong with learning more because the more you know, the easier it is to learn.”
