Early snow a plus for the nordic team

Happy about the early snow the Nordic team takes advantage of a Minnesota snow fall. Practicing six days a week working on distance and speed training. "We are also focusing a lot on technique," said Coach Doug Boonstra.

This year's girls’ senior captains are, Jenna Bjorkman, Kari Mlynar and Lauren Rantala. Boys’ captains are seniors Jason Mooty, Andrew Craig, Jon Rice. “I would like the captains to lead by example, work hard and be well prepared," said Boonstra, “but mainly encouraging."

“We are evenly balanced in classic and skate,” said Boonstra, which are added strengths to the teams. So far, both boys and girls team have used it to their advantage. The boys are undefeated, 16-0, and the girls are 15-1. "The girls biggest challenge will be Burnsville," said Boonstra.

Seventy students went out for Nordic this year. Twenty are on the varsity team, ten boys and ten girls. A couple of top varsity skiers this year are Rantala and Eric Fagerstrom. “Lauren is a focused and committed skier who trains well," said Boonstra. Fagerstrom is also focused, "He loves to train and sometimes we have to pull him back."

Boonstra looks forward to a successful season. “My goal this year is to send as many kids to state as possible,” said Boonstra. By helping kids take advantage of the early snow, Boonstra hopes he will do just that this Nordic season.
